Facilitating a Presidential Debate: A View from the Balcony



Like many others, our primary reaction from the first presidential debate was “cringe,” as well as a recognition that Chris Wallace had an impossible job. As facilitators, we tend to notice how human interactions are orchestrated. Looking at extreme examples or cases is often instructive. While it is highly unlikely for any of us to end up in this exact situation, there are still principles and relevant lessons we can learn. We want to offer you our perspective “from the balcony” of bright spots and pain points of the facilitation[1] to help us all become more effective and thoughtful while facilitating in high-heat, high-stakes situations.
